JROCK QUIZ: PART III [March .14th. 2009 // 04.43pm]
  mood // blah

Quiz 1
Quiz 2
(Take those first!)

Just as before... Here we go.
There are 21 DIFFERENT (I stress that, don't get tricked) artists' PVs shown in the video below.
Your mission is to name the artist and then the song.
If you can, name the members of the band--optionally with the instrument(s) they play. (I only want the people that were in the band AT THE TIME THE PV WAS CREATED listed; PLEASE DON'T LIST EVERY PERSON WHO WAS EVER IN THE BAND THX.)

Please note, I'm not going to be lenient on scoring. You're only getting credit if you actually write the correct information. Sarcasm like "OH GEE I WONDER" won't fly. However, you're welcome to write "WTF IS THIS SHIT" if you don't expect credit, as there should be several clips in here to inspire that reaction. XD

I'll let you guys know how you do. Comments are screened, obviously. But really, please don't look ANYTHING up, even if it's a "It's on the tip of my tongue, I'm just gonna double-check" thing. I want it to be completely honest okay? :3 AND YES, YOU HAVE TO ANSWER THE REALLY EASY ONES.
Good luck ne~! ♥

Note: The annoying black (sometimes white) boxes are to cover up song information. Deal with it. |D

This year has meant so much to me. I've done so much travel, met so many of you that I never knew I'd be able to, made new friends and strengthened old bonds. This is for you guys.
My 2008 in 9 minutes. If it seems conceited, that's not the intention. I want to share with you guys what I did this year and how every one of you made it, no lie, the best year of my life. I can't remember when I've been so happy and blessed before.
Thank you so much.
Enjoy.

JROCK QUIZ THE SEQUEL [September .6th. 2008 // 06.36am]
  mood // accomplished

I've literally stayed up all night finishing my second jrock video quiz!
First and foremost, if you haven't taken the first, please do that before this one, over here.
I say that because I intentionally made this one a pain in the ass so you'll feel better about things if you do the easier one first. XD
It's supposed to be obscure and difficult but I really want people taking it anyway. You're not supposed to score super-well, this is just for fun. If it helps, know that I'd be lucky to get half the bands on here if I didn't make the video myself (okay, maybe a little more than half) but I'd choke on most of the songs.

ANYWAY. Like last time. Here we go.
There are 22 DIFFERENT (I stress that, don't get tricked) artists' PVs shown in the video below.

If you can, name the members of the band--optionally with the instrument(s) they play. (I only want the people that were in the band AT THE TIME THE PV WAS CREATED listed; PLEASE DON'T LIST EVERY PERSON WHO WAS EVER IN THE BAND THX.)
Lastly, the song's album and year are great bonus points if you can do it, but not required.

Please note, I'm not going to be lenient on scoring. You're only getting credit if you actually write the correct information. Sarcasm like "OH GEE I WONDER" won't fly. Good luck ne~! ♥

(As I still have people taking the first quiz I will not post an answer key yet. :3 Hang tight.)

Note: My editing apparently got worse on this one. Don't mind the rough start; the PV was a HUGE file and I did the editing on a laptop, so my processor could only handle so much stress. ^^;

VelBet create of prime Party vol.2 @ Holiday Shinjuku [June .26th. 2008 // 01.53am]
  mood // sore
music // "PROTOPLASM" - RENTRER EN SOI

Club Holiday.
Shinjuku, Tokyo.
"VelBet create of prime Party vol.2" with VelBet, RENTRER EN SOI, Ensoku, born, Rosario, Kis&nate, THE SKULL FUCK REVOLVERS, Downer.
My first real visual kei show.
My first concert in Japan.

Holy hell, I experienced concert culture shock.
I've seen live videos before but it's... so different in person.
Everyone was so nice. There was no pushing to the front. Everyone shuffled between bands every time, so when your favorite band was on you went to the front. And everyone was so nice about letting people in.
There was no mosh pit. It was scarier than a mosh pit. XD I learned Japanese concert coreography, amg.
Between every set the house lights came on and most people sat down on the floor.
A curtain closed after every set to hide the stage for breakdown and setup, which was impressively quick every time.
People set their things on the floor. Thievery = not a problem.
Shinjuku has a strict smoking law so there was no smoking in the actual concert hall.
Cameras and video recorders were not allowed, but there was no bag check or search. Honor system seriously works here.

All of that explained, I entered when Downer was already playing. Ah, they were good. REALLY good. American bands could learn a thing or two from this. They were the opener, and they had so much energy... ah! The vocalist was wearing really dangerously low pants. o_o And at one part started shouting "MOTTO MOTTO MOTTO MOTTO". Probably a part of the song, but it was sexy as hell and made me think of you, Zelly. XD For them, I was probably 5 rows back most of the time. Just observing.
It seemed there was black or white in the way audience reacted--you were either really into it with coreography and everything, or you just stood there. No in between. Freaking weird.
I also noticed at this point, there were a bunch of girls leaning halfway over the railing, and this one girl behind them kept ramming into one of the girls. Okay, what the fuck was that? I had no idea. Bizarre. I figured they were friends of hers and she was screwing around.

THE SKULL FUCK REVOLVERS were next and I made the mistake of having moved to the railing. Uh. This is the only time in my LIFE I have preferred to NOT be right in the front. I stuck it out until the end, but holy crap. o_o So that coreography thing? I guess the unspoken rule is that if you're in the front couple of rows you're supposed to all do this coreography. I don't know how to explain it if you don't know what I'm talking about. I did my best to copy the people around me, but I probably looked like a fool.
Anyhow, the band was GREAT. The vocalist was a spaz, reminded me of Miyavi. Dark hair and facial piercings, too. He came out all hoarding a Meiji chocolate bar that he threw into the crowd. And at some point into their set he pulled out another and smeared chocolate all over his mouth. XD The band was all kinda... freaky. I loved it, I was intrigued. They had this black-and-white striped costume thing going on. Reminded me of a circus act or something. And they had 6 members--one was a violinist. F'real. He was awesome. I like him now.
Oh, so that girl bashing in to the others during the first set? I got to experience what that was about. It was one of the coreography things. You lean over the rail and people jump into you. Okay. WHAT? OW. MY RIBS GOT MASHED. One time I got hit before I was ready and it knocked the wind out of me entirely.
Understandably, after their set I moved to hide in the back by the merch tables, which was probably the best view in the house. It was elevated so you could see the stage (the club was SMALL so it was a clear view) and you weren't in the middle of everyone coreographing to the music. (I still don't get how people decide when to do what motions. But whatever.)
The vocalist went back by their merch area and was meeting fans after the set. Ah, I refrained on account of my horrible Japanese, but I felt all giggly about it.

Before the curtain opened for the next band, we clearly heard ONLY the vocalist singing something. I KNEW THAT SONG... gave it a minute, and realized it was the Dragon Ball Z themesong. The crowd was cracking up. And that set the tone for Ensoku's set. Wow. They were just... hilarity incarnate. Reminded me of the SEX MACHINEGUNS; really heavy awesome sound but just obscure and ridiculous and silly. For the first song, the vocalist had a whistle, and at certain parts he'd blow it and march across the stage, and the audience would follow. It was funny. XD At one point, he kept demanding that the audience "give him their hands" when people weren't raising their hands, and pretty much everyone did. This guy was hilarious, ahh.
After his little dialogue that I didn't really understand, he held up a pen and goes: "This is a pen!" And their next song starts. WHAT THE HELL? I gigglefitted, and... the whole freaking song... almost all the words were "this is a pen." No one else seemed to be laughing during the song, and I had a hard time containing myself.
They were cool.
I RECOMMEND.

Rosario was on next. I didn't know what to think of them at first. Their guitarist was a complete loli who ROCKED SO HARD his image and sound completely contradicted one another. The vocalist, at first, I thought looked kinda like... I don't know. A drag queen? But not a bad one. He was kinda cute, he seemed shy. They were more mellow on stage as a result it seemed. But I kinda liked them. They were reminiscient of a more gothic band, in looks at least. The vocalist sounded like Sakito. And at one point they did this waltz-sounding bit on guitar, and danced around the stage in unison. The audience followed the vocalist. Was cool.

Kis&nate was oshare kei. o_o TOO SPARKLY, even the vocalist's lip ring was sparkling like whoa. They weren't my cup of tea; I sat for most of their set. Though they DID have a member that was probably a guy but... REALLY looked like a woman. I mean, shaped like one and moved like one. So I can't even be sure. XD

I was sad because I thought RENTRER was next when I moved to row 5 or so, but it was born. Who I have heard of and didn't mind being up front for or anything. AH THEY WORKED SO HARD. I did all the coreography stuff with them. Including a lot of headbanging. It was cool.

SO RENTRER EN SOI WAS FINALLY NEXT. They were the only band that was entirely on stage when the curtain opened. And they had something else to offer. ALL the bands had such energy... RENTRER did too, but it was... controlled. Their performance was intense and dramatic, and there wasn't a lot of coreography going on. The only song I knew was the one they started with--I thought I was going to hyperventilate when it cued: "Shinwa". They used the piano version, mixing it for one tiny part with the harder, guitar version. It was beautiful. The entire song, there was really only one light on stage, shining upwards on Satsuki.
So when the lights came on for the next song, it was easy to see how GORGEOUS they were. ESPECIALLY Satsuki. He looked just like the CURE cover he's on, no lie. GORGEOUS. And Shun, to my left and my favorite member of the band--was wearing pants that would have been inappropriate if they had been any lower. So I was staring at those two the whole time.

VelBet next, so I moved back to the merch area. Definatly the crowd favorite. It was weird, considering they never seemed like a very big band to me. The vocalist, Yuki I take it based on how many screams of that name I heard, was the cutest thing. Probably unintentionally. During their encore he started a dialogue, then stopped, crouched over, and apologized while he fixed part of his costume that I guess was messed up. And the crowd ate it up, it was cute. They were pretty good; I got into their music. :3

I am SO SORE now.
I definatly recommend checking out the following bands from this show:
THE SKULL FUCK REVOLVERS
born
RENTRER EN SOI
Ensoku
VelBet

June 24, 2008 [June .24th. 2008 // 09.15pm]
music // "resonance" - TM Revolution

This is my full update for the day. PREPARE FOR LONG WINDEDNESS!
(AH, TM Revolution is on TV right now talking about his show in NY. I AM TRANSFIXED. More about that later. Man he's pretty.)
Mom, dad, someone--tell Nick he's singing Resonance, that song from some anime he likes. XD

OKAY.
I got to SeaTac and saw the family off at security. Ended up sitting around in line FOREVER waiting for a gate attendant to no avail. Well, like and hour later one showed up, and I found out no upgrading, no switching my seat. Which was in the middle of a row of 5. Well great. e_e The trip's not about the flight I guess though, right?

So I hung out for the half an hour more or so before we started boarding and didn't do much. Sent out a txt to a few people, and it was awesome to get replies. I know I don't usually txt, but I thought it'd be appropriate. :3

My plane.

hide and my plane.

When I got on the plane, it turned out there were two little girls (probably 10 and 6) to my left--who were really quiet and well-behaved so I can't complain--and a guy probably my age and his mom to my right. I ended up selling him two of my AA batteries because his CD player died. XD He insisted on giving me money for them, so I told him $1 was fine. I'll have to buy myself some backups, but everything I've got that takes batteries now have full batteries.

The flight was easy. I slept for most of it, which surprised me. I can't usually do that on such a long trip. But it worked. The whole time, it just felt so surreal that I was going to Japan that it was hard to believe. Until 30 mins before we landed, then I felt like I was going to cry or something I was so excited. XD Anyway, it only took about 9.5 hours, and we landed at 2:25 instead of 2:55. Win.

Customs were easy, everything was easy really in Narita. I got money exchanged and traded my JR Rail Pass order for an actual Pass. Got a reserved ticket to Tokyo Central Station, which I had to boogie to catch, but it was fine. YEAH SO. While I was trying to piggyback my luggage, the clip on the big bag freaking BROKE. IT BROKE. GUESS WHAT THAT MEANT? NO PIGGYBACKING. Yeah, Dad, your luggage sucks. So I got to drag my bags seperately--24lbs and 42lbs, not to mention my backpack--all over the place.

Train got to Tokyo Central, and this is where I bashed my face into the language barrier for the first time.
I found the JR ticket counter to get to Takadanobaba (via the Yamanote Line, this stuff I all knew), and my Japanese was pretty good for starters. Then she said something I totally didn't understand, and it took her repeating it twice before I realized she was telling me I didn't need a ticket if I had the pass. Since it's just a local train route, there aren't reserved seats. So, I'll know that next time.
It took me a while to figure out if I was at the right platform though, because Takadanobaba is not a major station, so it wasn't listed on the Yamanote Line even though I KNEW it was supposed to be! Deciding to chance it--worst case I could transfer no question at Shinjuku Station, the biggest station in Tokyo--I got on the next train, and Takadanobaba was indeed one of the stops.

A 25-minute ride later, I got off and found myself totally lost on the platform. Which is weird for a tiny station, right? First, I saw stairs and figured that must be the way to go. I HAD TO DRAG MY SUITCASES UP TONS OF STAIRS. I thought I was going to DIE. It's been 80F all day, okay. When I got up there, guess what? I WAS IN THE WRONG PLACE. Commence dragging bags back down. Okay. Went to one end of the platform. Wrong way. I think it's appropriate for me to shout "FUCK" right about now--sorry about the language mom and dad, but you have NO IDEA. X_X The luggage was freaking HEAVY. So back down the other way, and I ended up going up MORE stairs, but at the right place--Waseda Avenue exit. Sweet.
I pulled out my maps to get there--it was probably 6PM at that point--and as I'm struggling to cart these freaking bags down the street and waiting to pass out from exhaustion, I spot AREA LIVEHOUSE. That renewed my spirit a little bit--I'm seriously within SHORT walking distance of AREA, the most renowned Visual Kei livehouse in freaking Tokyo. Badass. (LiZ and Nega were playing there tonight with some other bands I don't remember, fyi.) BUT. I knew from my maps that AREA was in the opposite direction of my hotel.
I was ready to lay down and die at this point, okay. And I was like the only white person ANYWHERE around, so I'm sure people thought I looked pretty freaking stupid. XD I finally decided I'd had enough of my bags and took a moment, on the sidewalk, to pop my big bag, pull out a belt, and strap the bastards together. It worked, for the most part, but then I had what, 66 pounds to drag around? Even with both arms I had to keep stopping and resting.

I'm gonna be buff when I get home. XD

AND JUST WHEN I THOUGHT SALVATION WAS IN SIGHT--the Starbucks on the corner meant Tama Ryokan was nearby--I realized the freaking thing was on a hill. At least it wasn't a hill like Seattle, but OW. I was GROSS by the time I got to their door. XD When I came in I was greeted by one of their kitties, mewing pretty loudly. I called for the owner a couple times, but didn't see anyone, so I took a breather downstairs. Michael, said owner, came in after about five minutes and took me up to my room. I managed the luggage in two trips without it being too bad. My room isn't that small--a lot of rooms in Tokyo are for lack of space, but this is nice! The owner's wife did recently tell me that they'll probably move me in a couple of days because this is a two-person room, and the other is more modern. (I kinda like the traditional feel though, it's cool.)

So I found out where the toilet and bathroom are, as well as this big sink down the hall for stuff like brushing teeth and doing makeup.
Stephen, I asked Michael if the cats speak Japanese, and he said they tend to ignore him in both languages. XD They are so cute, dude. I saw two today, but I think there are four.

My futon and my laptop perch.

Luggage, TV, and a little stand thing in the corner.

The stand thing again and my table.

Fuuuuton!

I got somewhat settled, got my luggage in here and threw some things into my purse. Posted that last post to let you guys know I was okay. Then I headed out--destination, Lawson, food, and AREA.

Lawson, Michael led me to and that was cool. I bought a big bottle of Pocari Sweat for 200Y, which is awesome. It's full of electrolytes so it's a really good sports drink in this kind of weather, and I've had it before and love it. I also bought a little package of hotcakes to heat up in the morning for breakfast. XD And then I tried my hand at the Loppi ticket machine to buy tickets for some of the concerts I wanna go to.

Lemon chuhai, Pocari Sweat, and hotcakes!

I felt like I was ramming my head into the language barrier wall again. I understood most of what it asked for, just not how to type it in! And silly me, I left the "How to Use a Loppi Machine" instructions at the inn. So I came out unsuccessful, but I DID find out that the Angelo and lynch. (Nagoya) shows I wanted to see are not sold out.

I walked past AREA Livehouse probably 3 or 4 times. The LiZ show was going on so there was a bouncer, and a sign out front that I couldn't read, and another sign I interpreted as meaning the box office is open until 9 PM. It was 8:30. But go me, I wussed out every time because of language barrier. Every time I try to speak in Japanese, people just ramble freely and I have no idea what's being said to me. .___.

Tomorrow.
Tomorrow I'm planning on going to Shinjuku, anyway--Holiday Shinjuku requires you buy concert tickets AT THE VENUE, and 3 of the shows I wanna see are there. So tomorrow is the great ticket hunt.
RENTRER EN SOI plays there tomorrow night. I really hope it's not sold out.

I decided I wasn't really that hungry. Honestly, they fed me WELL on the plane and my body's not used to eating at this hour. So no food.
I found a second Lawson, though, and stopped in for Chuhai, which I had decided I must have. The can's like... I'm guessing 16 ounces? I can't find a measurement on it. Anyway, it's really good. Lemon flavored. :3 And cheaper than the Pocari by 60Y. I think I like this country; alcohol is cheaper than a sports drink?!

Behold, chuuhai.

I walked around the area a lot. I want to have it DOWN, and fast, so I can get wherever I need to be. There's a McDonald's not far, and a Wendy's and Starbucks RIGHT by me. There are a couple curry places too, and one had 550Y curry. AWESOME.

The area I'm staying in. And this is a SMALL neighborhood in Tokyo.

Then I came back, and got here a little after 9. The owner's wife came up to talk to me; she said she thought I was out, and that Okusa (Kozue) had called and she'd told her that, and please call her back. I kinda put it off because I figured I could email her, and I'm really not confident with my spoken Japanese at this point. But she came back up and insisted, even though I was just gonna shoot Kozue an email. So why the hell not.

I went downstairs and used the payphone. God, my spoken Japanese was bad, but I managed to hold the entire conversation without using English. I had to tell Kozue I am better at writing than speaking, so she was really careful with how she worded things, and that was awesome. It made for a doable conversation. She put Kaito on the phone with me--my 10-ish year old host brother--and that was cute. She said he kinda remembers me, but I guess Kana doesn't. She was just a baby last time I visited.
Kozue herself sounded like a giddy schoolgirl when she said things like "It's been so long!"

I promised to give her my keitai (cell phone) number once I get one from Justin. I talked to him via Myspace before I went shopping, and to meet him I would have had to go to this hookah bar he was visiting with friends, so I opted out to go shopping. We're meeting tomorrow though, for sure. I'm planning on daytripping to Shinjuku. Shopping at Closet Child (a used alternative clothing and jrock CD store), and going to Holiday to buy those tickets I want.

One thing I forgot about here was that I went to a CD store and spent more than I probably should have, but I was really picky about the money I spent. Bought 4 CDs. I'm not buying any more music unless it's from a used shop, because it's too much. And the major stores don't have my indies bands or old bands like Malice Mizer or Due'le. They also lacked the Miyavi album I want. D: Still, I made out pretty well.

Top left: MUCC's "Shion" album. 3000Y is not bad compared to Kinokuniya's prices, but CDs here hurt my wallet.
Top right: hide's "Pink Spider" single--a steal at 1000Y.
Bottom left: Siam Shade's "VII"--another 1000Y-ish CD. Only it's not a single. Awesome.
Bottom right: L'Arc~en~Ciel's "Drink it Down" single. Another 1000Y-ish thing.

You do the math. I'm not spending that much in a single stop again.
Zelly, guess which one is yours? :D

Ah, when I started writing this, TM Revolution came on TV. They were talking to him about his recent show in New York, and I whipped out the camera and just started recording. The part I got is something about some fan he met 4 years ago or something. I don't really know what's going on, but dude, it's Takanori.

Sorry it sucks; that's what I get for recording TV.

And I'm spent. I think I'm taking a shower soon and getting some sleep. If the sun set so early, it's bound to rise early, too. I'll get an early start on Shinjuku.

More tomorrow.

ADMINISTERING A TEST. PLEASE TAKE IT PEOPLE!!
Primarily aimed at jrockers on my list, quite clearly.
FIRST AND FOREMOST IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU DO NOT CHEAT, OKAY? REAL, FAIR ANSWERS.
The point of me posting this is to realistically see how the average jrocker would do on it, and if everyone wikis the bands and shit it's going to defeat the purpose.
WTF AM I TALKING ABOUT? Do read on.

I made this mix video for [info]kit_n  (IF YOU ARE READING THIS BBY DON'T WATCH IT YET; YOU'RE NOT GOING TO GET IT YET TRUST ME) as a future test of her jrock knowledge, which she's currently getting into and building upon. :3 So what I need is for others who are already jrock tards to take the test.
Here's the video, below. There are 20 DIFFERENT (I stress that, don't get tricked) artists' PVs shown in it.
Lastly, the song's album and year are great bonus points if you can do it, but not required.

The purpose of this is a PRACTICE RUN for statistics. ♥
To any non-jrock geeks or new jrock geeks on my list, you're welcome to have a go at this as well. :D Chances are if you're at least an anime fan you can name an artist or two in here. :3
Good luck ne~! ♥

Notes:
-There are some pinkish-whitish boxes in a couple PVs. That's my ghettotastic way of covering up song information. Ignore them.
-2 or 3 of the PVs have piss poor audio quality because I was too lazy to fix it. Try to ignore that, too.

Quotes of the night....

(After seeing the guy manuever our car out of the space): "Wow, I think that was even better than staying for Avenged Sevenfold!" (Stephen)
(In response to the girls singing Disney songs at the dinner table: "This is madness." (Stephen.) "SPARTAAAA!" (Me.) *whole tables bursts into random laugher*
"And now, playing all of the songs tonight, one member of a Blue Oyster Cult tribute band!" (Stephen/Wes)
"It looked like a street... so we turn... and then it's just a fuckin' wall AND SOME BUSHES!" (me) I have no idea why we all found this so funny. We were 'tardtastic at this point.

Video to come. I've started uploading.
Most of my videos are little tiny clips for three reasons:
1. My camera can only take up to 90 seconds of video anyway.
2. After each video, it takes time to process each one that is relative to how long the video is. Longer video equals longer processing time equals I might miss something I want filmed.
3. As I was right up front, I had security guards in front of me that I didn't want to make suspicious.
